World’s Most Expensive Photograph
Andreas Gursky’s photograph of the Rhine river fetched a whopping $4.3 Million USD at auction yesterday. The painting is massive: 143 inches by 73 inches. Gursky is known to only produce 6 copies of each of his photos, of which usually 5 end up in museum collections. In the case of the ‘Rhine II’ piece, the other copies are owned by the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Tate Modern in London, Munich’s Pinakothek der Modern, and the Glenstone Collection in Potomac, Maryland.
